CLAUDIA JESCHKE

Claudia Jeschke, dancer, reconstructor, historian. Along with her studies of Theaterwissenschaft at Munich University and a doctoral dissertation on the history of dance notation systems she was professionally trained in various dance forms. As a guest professor she taught in Europe, USA, Canada and Asia, and she introduced dance studies as an academic discipline in German theater and dance departments such as Munich, Leipzig (where she finished her habilitation) and Cologne. 2004 she joined the faculty of the Department for Studies in the Arts, Music, and Dance at Salzburg University.

choreography Mensch im Wahn to Harmen Tromp.
The memories of Tromp of that process as well as the vigorous and touching
indications that Jerschik gave through handwritten notes have formed the initial
points of that project.
The piece is conceptually divided into three parts:
1. Original
2. Reconstruction

Karttunen Kollektiv is a contemporary dance production company that manages the artistic work of choreographer and dancer Jyrki Karttunen. Karttunen Kollektiv produces approximately one new premiere every year. The group also tours domestically and internationally with their repertory programme. The values of Karttunen Kollektiv are built around understanding dance as both one of the most multi-faceted forms of philosophy and as a significant act within society. The Helsinki-based company believes that only by being as local and personal as possible in one’s art is it possible to gain broad-based and truly international appeal. Jyrki Karttunen’s dance art can be seen as a combination of a special type of extraordinary human behaviour combined to material that is more clearly recognisable as traditional dance movement. The creative work aims to make observations of human nature and the reality of the performance. Karttunen Kollektiv’s virtuosity and humane approach to the expression of dance have firmly established Jyrki Karttunen and Karttunen Kollektiv at the forefront of Finnish and international contemporary dance. The performances offer spectators not only the viewer-friendly experience that Karttunen is known for but also significant food for thought when pondering the basic nature of being human.

The Integration Dance Theatre Direction was founded in 1998. The idea of the Theatre came from Jacek Łumiński – the director of the SDT and from Jacky Poole, Diane Warden and Lynn Ingram after Łumiński’s visit at a dance festival in Newcastle (Great Britain) and Poole’s, Warden’s and Ingram’s return visit at the V International Contemporary dance Workshop and Performance Festival in Bytom. The year 1999 brought several strong arguments for creating a theatre that combines handicapped people and dancers. That year Jacky Poole and Pietro Cardillo taught the first workshop for people using wheelchairs. Workshops were finished with a spectacle. In 2000 a next workshop was organized. Pietro Cardillo and members of the VELCRO Company (Great Britain) were the teachers. A new spectacle “Understanding a Silent Echo” was performed at the VII International Contemporary Dance Conference and Performance Festival in Bytom. After these workshops, a group of people was chosen to participate in the project “Integration Dance Theatre – Direction”. The Integration Dance Theatre “Direction” is a contemporary dance group. Its goal is neither therapy nor rehabilitation but searching for new esthetics of dance and a professional creative work characterized by high artistic quality. The Integration Dance Theatre “Direction” is the relation between physical expression and dancer’s mental shape. It gives a wide spectrum of possibilities to express yourself. Integration dance is a movement that starts deep inside a person resulting from his or her feelings and thoughts. It is based on the idea of partnership, equality, mutual respect and understanding. This dance is a form of breaking down barriers and crossing lines that are settled deep in our consciousness. The Integration Dance Theatre “Direction” changes general opinions on dance, dancer’s’ body and also the stereotypes regarding disability. The “Direction” integrates people from various backgrounds, in various ages, with different preferences and skills. Dance is available for everybody, it focuses on human’s abilities. Dance pushes human’s body to its limits. It does not dictate a technique but uses capacity of every person.

The fact that almost every dancer involved into dancing has a need of individual artistic creation is the phenomenon of contemporary dance. Calling the trials of artistic expression „The Choreographic Laboratory” we were driven by the wish of establishing the friendly form of presentation of what Silesian Dance Theatre’s dancers dream. The Laboratory is informal part of the Theatre’s organizational structure allowing to make the accumulated layers of ideas, imaginations about the world and art conception free; makes possible the sho-wing of particular thoughts on art’s role in modern world through questioning, supporting and fighting the interlocutors opinions or through the drawing out the innovative style. In operation it’s nothing more like the time offered to the dancers for their individual development, technical and administrative support as well as providing them with production and exploitation.
